Yannis M. Paulus, M.D., F.A.C.S., is the Jonas Friedenwald Professor in Ophthalmology, an associate professor in the Johns Hopkins University Department of Ophthalmology and Department of Biomedical Engineering, and a vitreoretinal surgeon at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins Medicine’s Bethesda, Columbia and East Baltimore locations. Dr. Paulus is a surgical and medical retina specialist and director of an active, multidisciplinary research laboratory developing novel retinal imaging systems, lasers and long-lasting therapies and nanotechnologies to allow physicians to determine cellular markers of disease, enabling early diagnosis, improved treatment monitoring and more individualized, personalized precision medicine tailored to each patient’s needs. After earning his bachelor’s degree in chemistry and physics from Harvard University and his medical degree at Stanford University School of Medicine, Dr. Paulus completed an internship at the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, a residency in ophthalmology at the Stanford University School of Medicine Byers Eye Institute, and a surgical and medical retina fellowship at Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins Medicine. After this, Dr. Paulus was the Helmut F. Stern Career Development Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and Associate Professor with Tenure at the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center for almost 10 years.
